After a long, cold night in the dank forest of Forgotten Hollow, Sage had finally arrived home. She stretched her aching legs and cracked her stiff back as her old bones groaned and protested back to position. Oh, how she longed for her bed, the soft eiderdown and the plump, duck feather pillows.
She sighed. It would have to wait. Maintaining her one ruse at night did not mean she was free from maintaining her other during the day.
Thankfully, she thought, as she crossed the threshold into her small kitchen, she had a brew or two in the refrigerator that would pep her right up!

βOh dear sweet Mother Moon!β Sage hissed under her breath, clutching at her chest as she saw what lay in wait for her upon her kitchen counter.

She took a moment to catch her breath, staring into the glazed eyed before her, rocked with revulsion and, simultaneously, huge relief. Finally able to breathe evenly, she reached into the pocket of her skirt, withdrawing the small phone that Wyatt had insisted she take along, in case of emergencies. She stared blankly at the screen, willing it on.
Nothing.

She pressed a few buttons and, she wasnβt sure which did it, but the screen finally came to life. To avoid confusing her further, and ensure she didnβt accidentally call someone she shouldnβt, Wyatt had only programmed in two phone numbers; his own and Broofβs. She called the latter.
The phone rang precisely three times, before Broofβs smooth voice responded. βBroof Hogwash.β
βHello darling,β Sage trilled, remembering their last encounter and adding an extra layer of sugar to her words. βHow are you?β

βSage? Is everything all right?β
Sage glanced over at the body-less head on her countertop and lied through a smile, βWonderful. Say, would Lilith happen to be with you?β
A momentβs hesitation then a curt reply. βShe is.β

βCan I speak with her?β

Another delay. Muffled voices. Sage wasnβt sure if it was him, or something to do with this new-fangled thing she was holding to her ear. Finally, Lilithβs cool call resounded in her ear. βSage.β
βI suppose you think this is funny?β

Lilith had an unusual laugh, rather more a snort. And that was all the answer she gave.
Sage didnβt wish to admit that she found any of this amusing, and tutted impatiently.
βDo grow up, Lilith, for goodness sake. So, who have I caught here?β Sage asked with a note of impatience and waited until Lilith finished laughing. βWell?β

βHis name was Fallacy Fangstock,β Lilith replied.
βFallacy Fangstock?β Sage repeated, playing along. βAny relation to Sophistry Fangstock?β
βOffspring, I believe,β Lilith purred. βSince his fatherβs demise, Fallacy has been in hiding. Itβs not clear why he returned to Forgotten Hollow after all this time, but there we go.β

Sage looked towards the ashen face on her counter. βJust as I think Iβve caught them all, another one crawls out of the woodwork. Iβll let the high priestess know immediately that the threat has been removed—β
βDo you think thatβs enough time to be compelling?β Lilith interrupted.

Sage clicked her tongue. βI was still talking, Lilith. And yes, I always used to catch them within a day or so—β
β—back when you were a sprightly hundred-something. Donβt forget that you are now geriatric. If you want this to be convincing, youβd be better to wait a few days.β
Sage wanted to defend herself, but the creak in her limbs held no argument.
βGood point,β she conceded. βDarn it. More nights in the forest it is then.β

βBoohoo,β Lilith teased.
Sage looked carefully at her new trophy, taking in every detail. βYouβve done a good job here. Heβs rather well finished.β
βIf youβre after free surgery, Sage, youβre not getting it.β

Sage bristled. βHeβs so young, the poor man. Who was he actually?β
βA vagrant,β Lilith said softly. βA nobody.β
βFrom the morgue?β

A pause, just a second too long. βYes.β
βI see. Well thank y—β Sage began.
βI didnβt do it for you.β
Sageβs handset beeped and flashed back to the home screen. Call terminated. How very rude. But then, Lilith had always been rather frosty.

She looked again at the head on the counter. The pale skin, the chiselled cheeks, the neatly filed fangs. The hollowed eyes and haunted expression. βFallacy Fangstockβ looked every bit the former society vampire gone rogue. This poor man.
And poor her! As if having a fridge full of blood vials wasnβt bad enough, now she had to store a severed head for a few days.
The clock in the hallway chimed to denote the hour and Sage groaned. She had no time for a perk-up potion, she had a hair appointment to attend. She didnβt need to have her hair manipulated by a human to keep it so buoyant and fresh, but she did need to keep up appearances.

She swept down her dress and ran her fingers through her hair, causing it to coarsen and texture in her grasp until it resembled that of a regular person. Then she placed the head gingerly into a carrier bag and popped it in to the fridge, leaving a note on the door so as not to alarm her guests when they discovered it.
Sheβd pick up some groceries while she was out and perhaps pay Moon a visit, as she had departed so rudely on their last outing.
And then sheβd be coming back for a long, long nap.

The box that been delivered was bordering on enormous, but its weight was no problem for Caleb.

He settled it into the corner of the flower shop and gently pried it open to inspect the contents. Even though he had very little interest in plants, he had to admit that the stock deliveries were amusing. He had no idea that there were so many plants in this world, so many different potion ingredients. So many combinations. He ran down the inventory list with his fingertip, speedily checking off everything present and mentally cataloguing it, also.
Caleb couldnβt really explain it, but he did have a knack for anything like this; stockpiling and organising words and trivial information. He only wished that skill extended to more complex data; to instructions that didnβt make sense and to the intangible.

His thoughts wandered, as they often did, to his little vampire wife. Heβd been following her most of the last few days, blocked at every chance by Wyatt or his mother. He pictured April as heβd last seen her, from afar, as heβd headed up towards the store for his shift. Sheβd been bent over the cauldron, carefully stirring the oversized pot with a humongous spoon.

He wondered how exactly she and Wyatt would turn these seemingly random items into potions and whether one of those potions would actually be able to cure them. Lilith had tried lots of things over the years, experimented with all sorts of plants and unusual pursuits. And then, one day, sheβd simply given up, and therefore so had he.
But now? Perhaps there was a chance. He rifled through the box, studying each item. Was bloodstone the missing ingredient? Maybe Lilith had only been a daffodil from her cure? Perhaps datura was the answer?
Caleb would never admit this to his sister, but he wasnβt entirely sure he wanted to be mortal. Unlike Lilith, he didnβt remember ever being mortal. Would he instantly know how to breathe? What if he didnβt? Could he learn fast enough? Or would he be cured and then instantly suffocate?
Worse were the other human inconveniences – would he need to be potty trained?

He was snapped from his morose thoughts by the sound of someone trying the shop door handle. That was unusual; the door barely latched, even the wind could blow it open. Caleb would have been long gone by now, if it wasnβt for that invisible barrier Sage had cast, the same barrier that also meant that he couldnβt simply open the door for this lady.
He peered through the glass, gesturing for the customer to enter.

She had been focused on her efforts to lift the handle but, as he approached, she jumped back, startled and skittish, her eyes snapped up to his own.

Calebβs heart metaphorically stopped. At least, he imagined thatβs what this room-spinning, stomach-plummeting feeling he was suddenly experiencing was. This pale, elegant, cat-eyed woman, who was somehow incapable of opening a door, was the single most beautiful creature he had ever laid eyes on.
He took a few rapid steps towards the door, mind blank, hand outstretched. He could feel the vibration in his fingertips, in his limbs as he tried to push through Sageβs invisible cage. Cat Eyes watched him eagerly, whispering something under her breath.

Caleb continued to push, his fingertips inches from the door, his skin on fire and just as he thought he would make contact—

The ‘explosion’ that tore through the store was immense, dispersing and resetting every fibre of Calebβs body. The heavy boom had given way to a tight ringing in his ears that echoed around the town square setting of a series of alarms in waves.
He quickly scoped his surroundings, expecting to see carnage and yet the store was unscathed, not a single flower had moved.

Caleb jerked his head towards the door, seeking the mystery woman. She had gone.
Caleb tried to think although his head was a foggy, rainbow mess. Surely this would not go unnoticed by the witches. Would they think heβd tried to escape? Would there be reprisal? As the temporary tinnitus waned, he slowly became aware of a familiar candy-floss voice emitting a wail.

April.
All thoughts of the green-eyed woman left his brain as Caleb sensed that he might have put his beautiful bind in harmβs way. In a flash he had descended the staircase to the basement, to the cauldron roomβ¦
Well, what was left of it.

He swallowed hard. Should he apologise? Play dumb?
βWoah,β Wyatt laughed, rubbing the ash from his eyes. βThat was the second biggest explosion I’ve ever seen. And now we know β thereβs no bloodstone in this potion.β

βOh my goodness!β April cried. βThat was so scary! We could have died!β
Wyatt only laughed and immediately Caleb knew how to react. He grabbed Aprilβs waist pulling her to him. In her dismay at having been in the path of a volatile potion, she didnβt seem to have noticed that he was standing behind her and she squirmed in his grasp; that cute little βeekβ setting all his remaining nerves alight.
βWhat did you do to her?!β he snarled at Wyatt.

βNothing,β Wyatt replied. βAre you OK, Apes?β
April writhed in Calebβs grasp, gently removing his hands from herself. βYes, Iβm OK,β she said in a small voice. She glanced at Wyatt and stood a little taller, lifted her chin. βCaleb – no.”
“No?”
“Let me go.β

Caleb could sense something in Wyatt and could tell from Aprilβs face that something was wrong. He didnβt understand why he suddenly felt like he was being accused of something when, for once, heβd done nothing wrong.
He glared at Wyatt, but backed off with a mumbled apology.
Was it his imagination, or did April shuffle a little closer to Wyatt? Heβd just caused a massive explosion and sheβd still rather stand near him. What in hell what that about?

βLook at this mess, Wy,β she whispered. βOh my goodness, Grandma Sage will disown us!β

βNah,β Wyatt said dismissively. βSheβs got errands all day and then sheβs out vampire hunting again all night. Weβve got loads of time to fix this. Sheβll never know.β
βWe can fix this?β April asked, with awe.
βSure. At least the walls are intact this time, mostly. Totally fixable. Unlessβ¦β he tapped his chin and raised an eyebrow at Caleb. βWas there anyone in the store? βCause if there was, Iβd better go find them and spin them a tale or my butt will be on literal fire.β

Calebβs mind wandered back to the mysterious green-eyed woman, and he almost replied with a βyesβ. But then, technically, she hadnβt actually been in the storeβ¦
βNo,β he replied. βWe had a delivery, but the driver had left.β

βOh! Thatβs a relief! Ooh a delivery?β April replied giddily. βIs it more ingredients?β
βNot afraid of another explosion then?β Wyatt teased.
April looked up through her lashes. βIt was quite fun.β
βThatβs my girl,β Wyatt laughed for a second before his face fell and he looked away. He cleared this throat. βI ordered loads of new plants for us to play with β I mean, experiment very seriously with – in this stock.β

βOoh yay! That sounds fun!β April clapped. βWhat did you get?β
Caleb interrupted, to reel off the inventory heβd read a few moments earlier. Aprilβs eyes grew wider with every item. Now who had her awe? Caleb thought, smugly. She must be so impressed.

βArenβt some of those plants poisonous?β she asked, looking back towards Wyatt. βIβm sure Iβve read about datura.β
βYeah, thatβs poisonous.β
βOhβ¦ but we can eat them? Vampires?β
Wyatt shrugged. βNo idea. A wise man once told me; βyou can eat everything, son, but some things might kill youβ.β

βThat doesnβt sound very wise.β
βDatura is poisonous, but donβt worry,β he soothed. βIn tiny doses, itβs fine β I use it in the tea. Too much and youβll probably pass out. But, like everything else itβs totally safe when handled properly. I wonβt let you handle it though, ha!β
April huffed. βI didnβt know that a βthumbfulβ meant βa big pinchβ rather than, well, the equivalent volume of my thumb! You could have told me that adding too much would make it explode!β

βTotal honesty; I had no idea.β
βBut you know everything!β
Wyatt visibly faltered. He glanced up at April almost shyly. βI donβt know everything or weβd have a cure by now,β he laughed, but there was definite tenseness in it. βUhβ¦ hey, Caleb, can you stick the box of goodies in my room? There are a few things in there I wanna take out before Mum sees. Oh, and make sure you close the door behind you, yeah? Iβve got the tea brewer set up in there. Last thing I need is her asking questions.β

βTea brewer?β April and Caleb said together. April let out a squeal, βOoh! For the strawberry tea?β
βYeah, strawberry for you and Mel. Iβm blending it with some vein juice; hopefully thatβll make it less ashy.β
βYummy!β April giggled. βOh, wait, wonβt you be joining in then?β
βI will,β Wyatt confirmed, poking his finger into the remains of the potion in the cauldron. βIβm making a slightly different batch for me though, obvs.β
βIβm so excited!β

Almost as if to punctuate the trill of her glee, the shop bell rang. Wyatt made to move and then glanced down at himself and over at Caleb.
βWait, nope, Calebβs in the shirt today β off you go, Vatore.β

Caleb went back upstairs slower than heβd come down. He could hear the pair behind him, whispering, but he was too far from April to hear what she was thinking. Although, if he had to guess, heβd wager it was probably more of the same thing sheβd been thinking the whole time heβd been standing next to her.
Wyatt is so smart.

Pfft. Wyatt couldnβt memorise a whole inventory list in a minute, like Caleb could.

Caleb arrived in the store to see the door rocking itself ajar in a strong gust.

Wyatt looks after me.
Caleb could look after her β if he could get anywhere nearby. But he couldnβt, thanks to Wyatt. Always there, always watching.

Fixing everything.

Making tea.

One day my husband came home with half a pig’s head to me. He imagined I was going to make boiled meat in jelly.
I was not happy, but now I suddenly appreciate that it was only a pig’s head lying on my kitchen counter π
The friendship between Lilith and Sage is something special. It is clear that the many years in which they have mutually exploited each other have left their mark.
Caleb is like an elephant in a glass shop. Of course, he will try to overcome all barrier when there is a beauty standing outside the door. Arg! That woman is most likely a sign of a multiplication of the problems so far.
The situation was really scary until April by a stroke of luck causing the potion to explode π
Caleb’s remorse and fear that it was he who triggered the explosion made me laugh for so long that I could barely breathe π€£
That kid is so headless ….. which makes him pretty dangerous.
Wyatt’s paternal care for April is truly impressive. He himself is an irresponsible child but shows an absurd kind of protective instinct when it comes to her.
Of course, Caleb gets jealous. It makes sense after he would without scrubbing seduce the cat woman if he had had the opportunity π
Should I laugh or cry now? π€
The conclusion of this chapter was that Caleb has suddenly acquired an interest in brewing tea.
I anticipate that the outcome will provide me with an answer to my previous question.

That is… very disturbing! I’m not sure how I’d react if my partner brought me a head, animal or otherwise. Thankfully, Sage will not be making anything with ‘Fallacy Fangstock’, other than a few waves in the coven.
Pretty woman… must open doooooooor… he indeed is pretty headless. It seems to be a theme in this chapter, heck even in the whole story. What makes us lose our heads?
Wyatt is starting to warm to April, whether he likes it or not. π
“Should I laugh or cry now? π€” Why not both? Good for the soul. As for what Caleb will do with his interest in the tea, well, I can tell you, as it’s probably obvious to anyone who knows what Caleb is like, that his decision will not be sensible or logical and will likely fail – whether that will be amusing or horrifying is up to your perception. π

HA! Head π€£ > my reaction when I saw the severed head on Sageβs kitchen counter. I canβt help it, I laughed. Hard. At their conversation, too. Lilith when sheβs not around Caleb is fun. Morbidly so, but by now you know my humour, so π
It does make me wonder how Lilith can come and go as she pleases, while Caleb was so obviously stopped by the barrier. Can Sage designate who gets to leave and who doesnβt? I wonder if itβs βthese people specifically can pass throughβ or βthese people specifically canβt pass throughβ. They seem similar but they are very different- one is a shield, and one is a prison. I wonder which one of those Sage weaved.
Sage, you donβt get to complain that youβre “oh so tired” and then casually schedule another visit with Moon for later in the same sentence. Youβre either exhausted, or youβre not. I know sheβs probably doing it to keep up appearances but for crying out loud. π
Stockpiling and cataloguing data is a great skill to have, Caleb! Theyβd love you in logistics! Come join my logistics off- on second thought, donβt, youβll drain every female in my building. But itβs still a good skill to have! The cataloguing, not the draining. What am I on about? π
Oof, and here we get another glimpse at a possible future of Caleb not accepting the cure. I really am scared of what will happen if he refuses, and if he refuses to let go of April. Because becoming mortal means losing his vampire wife as well as his hold over her. Oh gods, what was Bob doing at the flower store? And in Wellington boots? Wait, does Bob know Caleb? Something tells me that she might know Lilith, seeing how Lilith has memories of the other rogue vampires. Hmmβ¦.
Oooooh look at that! April telling him no! And with confidence, too! Thatβs some real growth right there. Sheβs never been able to stand up against anyone that had power over her. Maybe itβs because Wyatt is right there. Or maybe Sageβs flipchart really did help.
Oh gods and of course Caleb is jealous at Wyatt and Aprilβs strengthening relationship. Never mind the fact that heβs her dad. Heβs not Caleb and so heβs a threat. Dear LORD Caleb please donβt mess with the tea. Please donβt mess with the tea. I told you this in private already but at best thatβs an βIβm going to make Wyattβs tea taste badβ face and at worst itβs an βIβm going to get Wyatt out of the way entirelyβ face. Unless he just wants to prove he can make better tea than him, or something… … ….
Nope, nope, brain is saying sinister things. Aw man and itβs Caleb weβre talking about. What are the chances that heβll try to mess with Wyattβs tea, but mistakes the batches and does something to April or Melindaβs tea instead? π¨

I am now fully embracing the ‘this idea is terrible, but it amuses me, so I’ll publish it‘ attitude. Glad you like. π
How can she come and go as she pleases? Magic. π Serious answer; this barrier isn’t a prison. Enjoy chewing that snippet. Yum yum. She is trying to keep up appearances, but also it was very rude to leave Moon sitting alone in the coffee shop, and Moon has been very worried, so Sage really should suck it up and go visit. She can sleep later.
Caleb’s application is in the post to you right now!
π¨
Name: Thor Gore
Age: 307
Education: I went to school, but got expelled.
Skills: I can stockpile and catalogue data. I have very fast reflexes. I am well-presented and charming. I can bake and mix cocktails with precision.
Previous work experience: I have worked in a bakery, a few bars, doing administration at a surgery and most recently as a flower salesman
Any unspent convictions: Technically, no.
Caleb not accepting the cure, very interesting prediction. Would he have any choice? “Oh gods, what was Bob doing at the flower store?” She wanted a new houseplant.
Yay! Go April! You can do it! Caleb could undo that at any moment, but let’s root for this little sliver of hope. WOOOO! He might not be wanting to steal her in the way that Melinda wanted to, but in Caleb’s eyes, Wyatt still poses a threat to April’s ‘ownership’. Gah, of all the shit I write here, that one still makes me the most annoyed. His ownership. Bleurgh.
Neutral, Snuffy, be neutral.
“Please donβt mess with the tea.” You know he’s not gonna listen to that. But, he is actually rather skilled at careful measurements from his days of baking and mixology, so hopefully whatever he does will be fine. What? He doesn’t have a set recipe to follow??? Oh, erm… π

Hiiii! π
…you know, Lilith, this joke with the head. That was remarkably Seth-like of you. >;D Anyway, now I’m wondering if this is where Lils got her plastic surgery skills, making random corpses look like vampires. Also, for some reason seeing Broof out on the porch in sleepwear makes me suspicious. I have no idea what I’m suspecting him (or them) of, but it feels off somehow.
Also, blast. And I don’t mean the obvious consequences of Wy and April trying to modify potions very un-seriously. Blast as in “Kitty found them.” I know Sage is strong and thus her spells will be as well… but will they really last when Kathryn takes it into her head to get in? Will she be motivated enough, though? She did seem to plan on finding Caleb again, before… and that makes me think of another tidbit. Did Caleb, by binding a witch, become a sort of a hybrid himself? I have no idea, but if anyone knows, it would be Kat. :O

Hey!
Ha! Yes indeed, bringing someone a body part, very Seth-like for sure. I can tell you that her surgery skills were in part to vampifying corpses, yes. And in part to fixing Caleb’s casualties. What, Broof isn’t allowed to wear pyjamas on his porch? π
Ooh, interesting theories. I can tell you that Kitty certainly knows some information the others don’t about the intricacies of hybrids. π

…and that. Yeah. That’s… you know, Caleb might be the one character that throws me for the biggest loops around here. Something about the contrast of him having basically the mind of a toddler but also being capable of such levels of destruction. Something about him being completely horrible but also being sincerely incapable of processing that fact. *shakes head* Yeah. It’s… exaggerated to the point of being surreal, but some people kind of are like that. Great job, there. Um. I guess what I’m trying to say is… I kind of forgot about that part. >.>
*laughs* Oh, he is allowed to wear whatever on his porch. I’m just surprised to see Mr. Proper walking around like that in front of his… hmmm… guest? ;D
Hihi, yeah. I’d kinda expect that, her being a hybrid herself and whatnot.

It’s totally normal to forget about Caleb’s so-called ‘broken dolls’ – he does, and the others have no idea…
Hahaha! Maybe he was hoping Lilith had a thing for freshly-pressed jammies? π
Gah, I so wanna spill. Patient, I’ll be patient.
